Everything you need to know about peel and stick wall tiles - what they are, whether they're right for you, where to use them, and how to choose, fit and care for them.
What are peel & stick wall tiles?
Peel and stick wall tiles are rigid self-adhesive panels that you simply peel the backing from and press onto a wall. No grout, no adhesive, no tools, no mess. They're made from a durable vinyl or composite board with a printed tile face, so they look like ceramic, subway or marble tile - without any of the installation work.
TradeDownCo offers two builds: a 2.5mm range (Squares and Subway collections) and a 1.2mm luxury Artisan range with a high-gloss finish for a more realistic tile look.
Why choose peel & stick over real tile?
- Cost - a fraction of ceramic tiling, and no tiler needed.
- Speed - fit a splashback in an afternoon instead of a weekend.
- Mess-free - no grout, no wet trades, no clean-up.
- Renter-friendly - removable without damaging sound walls.
- Reversible design - refresh a room cheaply and change it when tastes change.
The honest limits: they suit smooth, clean, dry surfaces best, and are not a substitute for full ceramic in permanently wet or very high-heat zones (see the FAQ below).
Where can you use them?
Peel and stick tiles work on any smooth, clean, dry vertical surface:
- Kitchen splashback - behind the hob, sink and worktops.
- Bathrooms and wet areas - away from direct, permanent spray.
- Utility rooms, bedrooms, hallways and fireplaces.
- Furniture upcycling - backs of shelves, cabinets, headboards.
Surfaces: smooth painted plasterboard, existing glossy tile, glass and primed MDF are ideal. Avoid textured or flocked wallpaper and rough, flaking paint - the tile needs a flat surface to grip.
How to choose the right tile
- Colour and finish - match the room's palette; gloss for a polished look, matte for a softer feel.
- Sheet size - larger sheets cover faster with fewer joins; smaller sheets are easier to cut around edges.
- Thickness - 2.5mm for a firmer feel; 1.2mm Artisan for a slim, high-gloss ceramic look.
- Quantity - measure the wall in cm, calculate the area, then add about 10% for cuts and waste.

How to install (the short version)
Clean and dry the surface, plan your layout, cut to size, peel the backing and press firmly, working top-to-bottom to keep edges square. See our full step-by-step in the installation guide.
Care, cleaning and removal
Wipe with a soft cloth and mild soapy water (avoid abrasives). Most peel and stick tiles are removable - warm gently with a hairdryer and peel slowly to avoid damaging the wall (see our removal guide).
Frequently asked questions
Are they waterproof? Water-resistant and splash-proof, but not for permanent direct spray; keep out of the shower wet-zone.
Do they damage walls? On sound, well-bonded paint, generally no; textured or flaking walls are higher risk.
Will they stick to textured walls? Not reliably; prepare the surface or choose a flat area.
How long do they last? Years when fitted to a properly prepped surface; adhesion depends on prep.
